what is the difference between hyperextending & tendonitis below the thumb?

Different issues: Hyperextending the thumb really means that the thumb was straightened beyond its normal limit, causing a sprain of the plate on the palm-side of the joint. Tendonitis below the thumb is usually along the wrist and is called "dequervain's" tendonitis.It can be very painful and rarely goes away on its own. It can be treated. Earlier you get treated, the less likely it is that surgery will be needed.

Rest, ice...: Although most tendonopathies can be helped with rest, ice, and splinting (such as a preformed thumb-spica splint available at many drug stores), occasionally physical therapy, phoresis, or even injections can be benficial.

Ice, nSAID's+brace: Ice and immobilization are the first treatments, after you decrease your texting. Over the counter braces and anti-inflammatory medications will also prove very helpful. Occasionally, prescription medications, injections and/or occupational therapy may be needed.  Surgery is rarely indicated.  You may also consider using voice recognition to spare your thumbs!

i have just finished 7 days in a thumb spica for tendonitis. it's still not better.  what do i do next?

If it is for : Dequervains or tendinitis of the first dorsal compartment then nsaids corticosteroid injection and avoidance of a rigid thumb spica but instead using a softer splint such as a comfort cool generally yields a good result in most cases , rarely these need surgery. Often the treatment goes splint then meds then injection but i find that doing all 3 concurrently works better and 7 days is not enough.

Yes it can: Thumb tendinitis ( de Quercains's) can cause pain in the elbow as the tendon(s) that are irritated arise from the elbow( lateral epicondyle) on the 'outside' of the elbow( or tenderness).Very common.See your orthopedic surgeon for examination. Best of Luck!

i have tendonitis in thumb and crps in wist.  dr. put on a cast for a month and said it will help treat both.  can crps be treated by cast?

Yes: Immobilization in a cast is a treatment option for CRPS - the concept is to allow the joint inflammation to settle down.  Eventually, though, you will need to work on restoring range of motion and strength in the wrist.

Absolutely: Tendonitis refers to inflammation of any tendon in the body, usually from overuse -- tendonitis of the hand is very common and is best treated with rest, stretching, and anti-inflammatories.  Other options include occupational therapy and corticosteroid injections.

went to doc for base of thumb pain and he wants me to go to pt i think it's tendonitis but i'm not a doc i can't pay for pt if it won't help opinions?

See dettails: Physical therapy is not the likely answer and is expensive. Get another opinion from a hand surgeon or rheumatologist. A cortisone injection often will resolve the tendinitis.

wrist tendonitis- moist heat=worse, ice=no help, elevating, brace, sling, idk what else to do. pain when movement in thumb. please help!can't do this!

Wrist pain: Try Ibuprofen 800mg three times a day for 7 days. If no response, see a hand surgeon or rheumatologist- a cortisone injection may help

More time, ice,: If it is really tendinitis more time is needed, ice and nsaids like Motrin can help.
