Soft tissue swelling: Due to trauma , caused by broken blood vessel. As long as function of hand full  there is no need for expensive test or treatment.

Patience: It could very well be that it may just take more time.  You can get better from the arthroplasty up to 6-8 months.  So if you are slowly getting better, you will likely continue to improve.  If you are not getting better, or are even getting worse, you need to let your surgeon know.

Check for lupus: You describe joint stiffness &amp; swelling which indicate joint inflammation (arthritis), not just joint pain (arthralgia). This coupled with the skin's sensitivity to the sun (photosensitivity) brings up the possibility of lupus erythematosus. It is an autoimmune disease (the body attacks itself) that is treatable. See your doctor and tell him/her the symptoms exactly as you did above.

May be infected: Would recommend prompt medical eval. The tissue of the thumb is fairly tough - so there isn't a lot of room for expansion . That causes pain. If infected - need to nip it in the bud right away.

Exam: You will need an examination and x-ray. Use OTC anti-inflammatory medication if not allergic ( Advil or Aleve (naproxen) )
