NO HARM: Your overbite is very common in many  people. Pushing your jaw forward can cause muscle strain leading to pain and soreness. You could see an ORTHODONTIST for a consult and when you have pain place a hot compress over the painful areas.

No it is not.: my advise either go and see a dentist and make sure there is no problem with your joint, or go and see ENT specialist.
something is not right there, they are supposed to be symmetrical ,in spite of the inflammation.
the dentist might be able to help, 
discovering why ,and providing mouth guard.
the ENT might be able to inject steroid in the joint for the inflammation and the pain.

Tmj/temporalis: i know you don't want to jump the gun. The temporalis muscles is a common source  of a 'knot' , muscle tension, and even migraine. I suggest you look up that muscle and see if that matches your discomfort. Tension and TMJ can cause these problems. If you know is somewhere else, make an appointment.
