Tendon catching: Sounds like you have developed what is commonly referred to as a "trigger thumb". In essence, your thumb tendon is getting stuck as it attempts to glide through its sheath. Can often be remedied with a cortisone injection or surgical release.

( i would also not do it in a job interview.) there is the risk of developing an overbite requiring braces to repair it. Overuse: Thumb pain at your age is usually due to overuse tendinitis or less likely laxity of the ligaments at the base of the thumb.  Try a thumb spica splint, heat, and advill or aleve (naproxen).  If this does not help get it checked out by your doctor or a hand surgeon.

Fluid?: With age ; thyroid, is it fluid build up at end of extremities? If so, would also likely have similar around ankles and would definitely suggest you need to see your dr for evaluation of overall health / heart function, which can be impacted by thyroid, or many other potential issues not amenable to internet diagnosis. See your dr.

Dermatitis/fungal: Your description could be related to a fungal infection or possibly a skin condition called dyshidrotic eczema. The fungal would respond to a topical antifungal and the eczema would require a steroid and possibly a prescription would be needed. Having hands that stay moist, in contact with caustic materials could trigger as can stress when it comes to eczema. You do do trial of each med to see.
