Observational Dx: Thrush is so common that most physicians & dentists recognize it on site. I don't recall ever having to test the scrapings even in medical school.

Clinical Diagnosis: The diagnosis of Thrush is almost always made based on a clinical exam, with distinctive white lesions on the mouth, tongue, or cheeks. Lightly brushing the lesions away reveals a reddened, tender area that may bleed slightly. A microscopic examination of tissue from a lesion can confirm the diagnosis, but this is rarely, if ever, done.

DNA now or later?: No reason not to wait. Get the thrush under control. A dna swab can be done at a later date.The results won't change.

Ask your DR: Oral candidiasis is a clinical diagnosis made by exam. You neglect to say if you have symptoms and you did not indicate what you see there. Candida albicans will routinely grow in cultures taken from a normal mouth. Thrush is an overgrowth of candida yeast, often related to diabetes, steroids, or antibiotics. There are easy and effective remedies.

Probably not, but...: ...it depends on how high the risk was from the exposure you are concerned about. But even the highest risk exposures usually don't transmit HIV, and with PEP the chance you were infected is near zero. As for oral thrush, maybe you don't have it:  for example, white coated tongue isn't the same thing. Anyway, thrush rarely occurs with early HIV infection.

What test?: A negative result on a HIV nucleic acid test, 4 months after exposure would essentially rule out HIV infection. A negative antibody test is not nearly as definitive and should be repeated at 6 months and one year.

Nystatin / Diflucan (fluconazole): You could use Diflucan (fluconazole) &amp; Nysatin. The question also is , why do you have thrush? Diabetes, antibiotic use, inhaled steroids, and immune system problems are some of the causes.

Thrush: Not HIV: Thrush can happen in a variety of settings. If you are not HIV positive then i think you may be on the right track.  Remember thrush is also a late stage HIV symptom...Not a newly infected with HIV symptom.
