Coordination  of movements within the mouth and of the lips which is necessary for speech to be clear has been disrupted for what ever reason. Unlike other aphasias these patients typically do not have difficulty with understanding of verbal information.

The left inferior frontal lobe is usually the area of concern. Patients have difficulty with speaking. They have full comprehension and know what they want to say, but cannot get the words out. It is a motor deficit and leads to the loss of speech.

Depends: If you mean aphasia from stroke, it depends on severity and pt age. Younger brain, more plastic, better able to reorganize, milder aphasia, better recovery. Global aphasia, elderly pt, prognosis is poor. Lots of speech therapy. Some drugs have shown possible benefit but as far as i know, none has been accepted as routinely recommended by rehab specialists. Progressive aphasia is another story.

Aphasia: There is an enormous literature out there on aphasia which was originally described in the 1860s. The origin of aphasia and the brain location where it occurs is now well described. It most commonly occurs as a result of trauma or a stroke or a bleed in the brain.  Research in treating these issues still has a long way to go in achieving any sort of brain regeneration.
