There are a: Multitude of tests that relate to the pituitary and hypothalamus plus the other endocrine glands -- but not the thymus, which is in a different body system. I don't know why your scans couldn't be read by someone in the uk. You need to discuss this with your doctors.

PE/Xray/CT/MRI/etc: Evaluation starts with history of the injury and physical exam (testing for tenderness, range of motion, cranial nerve exam, motor/sensation/reflexes/limb-position sense, etc). Imaging tests include x-rays (screening for trauma, arthritis), ct scan (more sensitive for fractures), and MRI (best for evaluating discs, ligaments, spinal cord).  Nerve conduction+emg can help diagnose nerve injuries.

Multiple views: Depending on what they are looking for, a neck x-ray study may look from the front (ap), from the back (pa), the side (lateral), a diagonal (oblique) or even other views. Often a ct is ordered, in which case many of these views are obtained simultaneously. It depends on the reason for the study and what needs to be seen.

Why do you ask?: Where did you get idea that your vagus nerve is damaged?  Vagal input on the right affects the heart rate, and on left predominantly, the other internal organs within the thorax and abdomen.  Vagal function can be tested, but I have NO clue as to why you are asking your question.

2. Also helps time the injury: acute versus chronic/ reinervation can also be seen
3. Axons are the covering of the nerve fibers.

Check with your doc: An ultrasound guided needle aspiration will get a quick answer and is no big deal. Discuss it with your doc. A 22 gauge needle should do the job.

Depends : Does an X-ray  show 'inflammation' and an inflammatory marker lab doesn't? If so, that is normal. Inflammatory lab markers  are usually elevated with infection or a severe inflammatory condition like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or other connective tissue diseases. Routine degeneration/inflammation of the spine such as with arthritis shouldn't show up in a lab.

X-rays and CT scan : Of chest and abdomen may show lymph nodes in those areas.Follow up with and seek reassurance from your dr.

Yes: Neurolgists can do both nerve conduction and muscle conductions studies to sort out these problems
