Really none: Have been reported that persist after the drug is stopped. There is a great deal of controversy over whether suicidal thoughts or actions are truly increased with chantix, since such thoughts/actions occur in people stopping smoking in general, and not all studies have shown this. Same with the cardiac problems. I have mostly seen vivid dreams and nightmares, and they have gone away after stopping.

A medication: Used for smoking cessation, which together with a counseling program can achieve quit rates of 40% or so. It is a partial nicotine receptor agonist, which means it activates the same receptors as nicotine, but does not turn them fully on, so it reduces craving and treats nicotine withdrawal without having full nicotine effects. It may also help reduce alcohol use.  Can cause depression rarely.

No drug interactions: There are no drug interactions but you must be aware of the fact that Chantix can cause depression, particularly in people who are depression prone.I don't know exactly why you are taking zoloft, (sertraline) but if you are taking it for depression then  be extra careful. If you have even one day of significant depression i would recommend that you stop the Chantix immediately and call your treating physician.

Irritability/insomni: Irritability and insomnia can occur in 3% of study patients. Nicotine withdrawal- like symptoms have been reported, so a slow tapering under a physician's care is recommended.

First 2 weeks: When you are building up to the maintenance dose, it is usually given as 0.5 mg twice a day first week and then 1 mg twice a day, and at the beginning of the second (or at most the third) week you stop the smoking.

Recommended: In the majority of cases the treatment is for 3 months. Your doctor may recommend a second 3 month course to improve the chance that you will quit smoking long-term.

Yes: it is relatively short-acting.  I hope that you continue to try to stop smoking, however, despite stopping the Chantix for whatever reason. There are other methods of quitting that have good success, particularly when combined with a formal smoking cessation program. Your local public health department, or the American Lung Association, Heart Association or Cancer Society often have programs.

See below: Chantix will be working maximally on the physiologic cravings within 1-2 days of getting on the highest dose.  But cravings are a learned response that occur in response to environmental triggers.  This type of craving may slowly reduce over months or longer as long as we stay on the meds and do not continue to satisfy our cravings.
