has anyone ever been on cimetidine (aka tagamet) to help get rid of flat warts?

Warts: The cure rates in the U.S. Study are impressive, even better than those in the turkish study. The main difference between the two may be in patient selection: unlike the placebo-controlled trial, the open-label study did not require a minimum of five warts. Placebo-controlled trials are useful, especially for warts. Taken together, the studies suggest that Cimetidine may not be better than placebo.

Tagamet (cimetidine) & warts: There are anecdotal reports of tagamet (cimetidine) eliminating warts. It is known to stimulate t-lymphocytes, which help control viral infections. One small trial in children found tagamet (cimetidine) as effective as the usual topical agents or cryotherapy. But in a more recent double-blind study, it was not found to be significantly more effective than placebo in adults or children. More research needed.

No: Tagamet (cimetidine) is an OTC antacid, some benefit in studies, low potential for side effects. It is probably not going to work alone, but not going to cause problems either.  In my experience plantar warts on the bottom of the foot only respond to cantharidin

i'm treating my plantar wart with aldara (imiquimod) and tagamet.  it's much less tender now  but  hasn't diminished in size very much.  is the treatment working?

Off label use : While they are both good treatments, studies have shown poor results with Aldara (imiquimod) for foot warts because the medication does not penetrate well. High dose tagamet is really indicated in the pediatric world because the adult dose required is extremely high.  Laser therapy and electrodessication are effective and quick. There are better topicals like 5-fu and pyrogallic acid.

is cimetidine safe for a six year old to treat many many warts on bottom of foot and many on hand? her dermatologist prescribed. i asked her pediatrician and he said ok if i do and ok if i dont. its twice a day for two months. just concerned?

Cimetidine : Cimetidine will work in majority of cases and is very safe. May cause diarrhea or nausea, or as with all medications, may cause allergic reaction or other side effects, in which case discontinue. Fortunately uncommon. Eight weeks administration is about right. Good luck.

800mg BID: The average dose I use in stubborn warts is 800mg twice a day for the average 150 lb person.  Cimetidine usually won't work by itself for warts.  The theory behind a H2 antihistamine is that chronic warts are sensitive to moisture and PH changes.  Tagamet (cimetidine) will lower gastric Acid over time causing overall body PH to increase slightly. Use with a topical wart remover.  Also keep feet dry.

Reduces stomach acid: Tagamet ( cimetidine) reduces production of stomach acid through blocking h2 receptors on the gastric parietal cell. This helps reduce aid indigestion / heartburn and can help heal erosions of the lining of either the esophagus or stomach. The h2 blockers are not as potent as the proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole.

Stomach acid reducer: Tagamet (cimetidine) is one of the older drugs used for stomach and duodenal ulcers. Before tagamet (cimetidine) persons on occasion had to have part of their stomach surgically removed to treat ulcers. Tagamet (cimetidine) significantly reduced stomach acid production allowing the ulcer to heal. It is not quite as strong for a better word as say Prilosec which blocks all acid production but at a low cost tagamet (cimetidine) 300 may be just fine.
