1: Diet modification of bowel diseases has not been well studied.  However some general guidelines apply.
High fiber, low red meat diet is helpful for good colon health
low fodmap diet (google this and you will see the food to avoid) is considered to help irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.

More Fiber Less Stre: I recommend 1-2 tablespoons of Psyllium Husks (Metamucil, Konsyl) in a glass of water.  Drink it fast (otherwise, it will turn to sludge in the glass)--and follow with another glass of water.  You should have an easy bowel movement every day.  If you're not doing that, you probably need more fiber--and maybe more magnesium (500-1,000 mg/day).  Stress may exacerbate the condition.

At one end of the spectrum is ulcerative colitis---a disease confined to the mucosal surface of colon. At the opposite end of the spectrum is crohn's disease--a transmural (full thickness) inflammation of any part of GI tract (from mouth to anus). Both are systemic & increase colon cancer risk.
