: There are 2 different types of diagnostic test for syphilis; Nontreponemal tests such as RPR or VDRL test, often used as initial screening test: treponemal tests, e.g., TP-EIA , used as confirmatory test for those testing positive RPR or VDRL.

It is very difficult to grow in culture because unlike most bacteria, it cannot survive outside of mammalian cells (i.e. On a petri dish), thus it is considered an obligate parasite. It has limited metabolic capacity, and cannot synthesize many biomolecules, which it requires from a living host. This has posed a hurdle for researchers.

if i got treponema pallidum on my clothes. i washed them with washing machine. and dryer them in sunlight. and then put the clothes in closet for 10 hrs. will there still be treponema pallidum alive on the clothes? thanks a lot?

: No, T. pallidum could not survive in these circumstances. It does not even survive on unwashed clothing:  you could immediately wear the clothes of someone with syphilis and would not be infected.
