Edema, high blood: Pressure, nausea, poor appetite, weight loss, itching.  Signs include protein in the urine.  You should have blood tests.

Swelling: Also fatigue and poor appetite. Vomiting and sluggishness. Itching is occasional. The symptoms are, as you may notice, not specific so lab tests are needed to sort out the reason for these vague symptoms.

Uremic symptoms: As kidney function deteriorates, one will start to develop symptoms of uremia (i.e. build-up of toxins the kidneys are unable to excrete) including persistent nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, diffuse itching, depression, and inability to concentrate.  As chronic kidney disease progresses, anemia will get worse and feel tired (kidneys produce a hormone that stimulates bone marrow to produce RBCs)

Those patients should see a nephrologist to see if they have to start some type of dialysis. Patients with mild renal disease may have no symptoms and have abnormal labs.

Depends on severity: In short, renal failure is not good.  A general measure of the degree of renal failure is estimated glomerular filtration rate, usually calculated from serum creatinine levels.  An egfr value above 90 is normal, above 60 is not too bad, below 60 has serious implications for health and life span.  If you have any concern about renal failure, see your doctor.

ESRD options: Patients with esrd have 4 options. One is hemodialysis (h), either at a dialysis center, doing regular or nocturnal h, or doing h at home. The second is, peritoneal dialysis. Esrd patients can receive a transplant for either a living related or a cadaveric donor. The 4th option is one that very few patients consider, and that is not starting dialysis at all leading to a fatal outcome.

Many: There are many causes of renal failure.  There is dehydration, medication causes especially diurectics and ace inhibitors,  and kidney stones. Also an enlarged prostate can lead to renal failure. There are other specific kidney problems such lupus, membranous nephropathy and minimal change disease that lead to renal failure.  However these diseases need special testing by your doctor.
