Sometimes: A chest xray can show nodules in the chest and is used as part of follow-up. The ct scan and the pet scan are more specific tests when  metastasis is suspected. 
For follow up after initial surgery the nccn has an excellent guide for patients. It helps to decide what tests are appropriate and what ones are not needed. We don't want to over irradiate people in follow-up.

my dad got a spot of melanoma removed on his chest. he said that the derm. got it all and it only hit the 1st layer. is there a chance it could have spread at this level? my dad is saying its nothing to worry about (from dr). what do you think?

: Your dad and his dermatologist are right. Melanoma has a very bad reputation, which is well deserved:  it is deadly when it spreads. But the actual overall mortality rate is low, because most melanomas are diagnosed early, as for your dad. That doesn't mean zero risk, but the chance it has spread or will be dangerous is low. If he has any doubt, he (not you!) can consult with an oncologist.

Maybe.: Xray is very insensitive tool to check for spread of melanoma.  Best prognostic indicator is the pathology report which gives a lot of info about the lesion.  Why did you get xr if you did not know it was melanoma?  Seems like a waste of money and time.

It can: Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer that if caught late can travel to other areas of the body and frequently will spread to the lungs and several other organs.  Once diagnosed, the likelihood of cancer spread depends mostly on the depth of the melanoma when removed.  If indicated, ct scan and or pet scans are typically done to check the lungs and other organs.

Metastatic melons a: The survival rate is very poor and side effects are many life span is measured in months and cure is almost non existent.

Yes it is: Melanoma starts in the skin or mucosa. If it spreads to the lung it is very serious. Some times surgery can be done to remove the melanoma from the lung. Some melanomas are susceptible to a new chemotherapy. It is best to treat melanoma while it is confined to the skin. Early treatment is curable.

i have melanoma in situ and am having surgery. what are the chances of it coming back after ten years? if i have skin checks every six months would it come back as another small melonoma or would it come back in lymph nodes, lungs, etc.?

Melanoma in situ: This stage 0 melanoma is considered a precancerous lesion by some and when totally removed very rarely recurs and doesn't spread. Continue yearly skin checks, observe your skin for any different looking or changing lesion, protect from sun but take vitamin D supplement. Other stage  but removed  melanomas can show up many years later in sites like the same site, the lymph nodes or distant sites
