i am currently taking protonix 20 mg a day for diagnosed gerd. i feel some gerd symptoms still at night. can i take pepcid while on this medicine for flare ups?

can a gerd flare up last for a few days in a row? i've had all the symptoms of gerd for about 2 weeks now even after taking pepcid complete and was wondering if gerd can still persist like that.... all i drink is soda though, so that may be it?

STOP THE SODA: I would think the possible culprit is what you have identified already as excessive consumption of carbonated drinks. I would suggest that you stop these as there is no nutritional value to this and all types of problems. This would be a good first step.

Treatment...: Have you tried treating the GERD to see if your symptoms improve? Try an over the counter anti reflux med that your doctor or pharmacist can recommend. Avoid very acidic or very fatty foods, don't eat within 2 hours of laying flat, keep the head of the bed raised, etc. Have you seen a GI doctor? I'm sure a GI doc can also help with a trial of therapy to see if your symptoms improve. Good luck!!

Colitis?: You may have some sort of colitis  that is inflammation of the colon. See a  gi specialist .

Getting harder: It's getting harder because you are ignoring the cause of your indigestion and instead trying to treat the symptoms. You have learned that for your OTC's are not the answer. You need to be evaluated by, preferably, a specialist Gastroenterologist to determine the cause of your symptoms, and then the cause can be properly treated.

Quite a few symptoms: Gastroesophageal reflux disease=acid from stomach refluxing into esophagus/mouth causing symptoms such as acid/sour taste in mouth, chest pain/heartburn, indigestion/dyspepsia, biter taste if bile comes up, sorethroat/hoarseness, coughing--symptoms often worse with spicey, fatty foods, alcohol, mint, caffeine etc...Everyone refluxes a bit; too much =gerd. Consult doc. Good luck.

See below: Eating within 3 hours of bedtime, overating, meals high in fat, tomatoes, spicy foods, nicotine, chocolate, peppermint, and alcohol can all make gerd worse.

can you still get gerd symptoms even with taking omeberazole?

Yes: it is possible that the omeprazole that you're taking is not adequately controlling your reflux, and the symptoms may still be present. If you have been taking the omeprazole for at least two weeks and are not improved,  I would contact the doctor who prescribed it and see what the next step is. You should continue antireflux measures also.  Good luck.

Possibly: There is a great deal of hormonal change during menses.  So it is definitely possible that your GERD can worsen during your monthly  cycle.
