can overstretching your arm and neck cause artery dissection? if yes, would pain in the area be the only symptom? worried because i overstretched my arm looking for an object and now my neck/shoulder hurts?

: An artery dissection would likely cause an acute stroke.  Since you typed this after the movement in would say you did not have one,?

if stroke like symptoms were caused by cervical artery dissection, would this show up in mrv and mri of brain. or only a scan of neck?

Depends on timing: A CT or MRI can detect changes of edema (fluid) due to cell death within the brain.  Often by the time these changes are seen, it is late in the process.  Also this would tell us the arterial territory involved, but not that it is a result of dissection.  Emboli or thrombus of an artery are more common causes of stroke.  A carotid dissection is less common, though more common in vertebral artery.

Several causes: Vasculitis, an inflammatory response where the body reacts against itself; infection, spreading from adjacent site; trauma.  It is quite unusual for neck artery to become inflamed.

Poor posture : Muscle spasm from posture, & exercise are not uncommon.
Carotid spasm is rare.

Carotid stenosis: Exposure to radiation, usually in the treatment of cancer, is a known cause of stenosis.   It doesn't occur in all cases but it can occur.

Hmmm: Trauma or neck manipulation can rarely cause vertebral artery dissection. Cracking is more likely related to the bone in the cervical spine.

Pain and numbness: The usual symptoms of a carotid or vertebral dissection are chronic pain and numbness or weakness in a part of you body on one side, usually in your face.  Treatment is usually just Aspirin but sometimes a more significant blood thinner.  Very rare however.

does an artery run bk to front @ bottom, on rt side of the neck? what would cause that area to swell & feel a bit of pressure when i noticed it? tks!

Need consult: Dear AmandaV,  the neck has many vital structures and I would be concerned about any swelling/pressure there.  You need to give a doctor more information and you need to be examined.  It could nothing life-threatening, like a muscle but it could also be something like your thyroid or the artery.  I hope this helps, Dr. C

Yes to some.: Cold weather often makes symptoms of inflammation worse, but stenosis, occlusion and dissection should not be affected by temperature.

i had a neck ct done for chronic sore throat. being treated for lpr. the ct showed aberrant origin of the right subclavian artery. is this something that needs surgery if its not causing any symptoms? or can it be left alone?

: Leave it alone. You are one of many with a physical abnormality of blood vessel development that has had no effect on your life to date and should not in the future. It would have no relationship to the throat issue.
