Accepted Answer

Not many things: If you are truly infected it must be with an organism of low pathogenicity.  Tuberculosis, fungal infection, cytomegalovirus come to mind.  But all this is unlikely.  If your vocal cords are swollen for 6 months you should see an ENT doctor asap.

Check for VCD: LPR: laryngeal pharyngeal reflux - when gastric contents rise up into the throat, beyond just usual heartburn (GERD). Sometimes it triggers spasms of the vocal cords trying to prevent aspiration into the trachea. Normal lung tests will miss this, unless you ask for flow-volume loops. Check inspiratory flows; look for cut-offs in airflow when breathing in.

Either or both: Cab drivers, for instance, may develop vocal cord polyps (growths) from recurrent screaming (at other motorists)  this starts as swelling and inflamation. Polyps can go on to become malignant tumors in rare cases. 
This needs to be looked into if symptoms persist.

See below: It is a sign of aspiration, treat the condition more aggressively with medication, eat lighter dinner, raise head of bed by 6-8 inches (not by extra pillows, for it could worsen the situation) go to bed empty stomach, if those measures are not sufficient then consult with a gastroenterologist, .

Several things: First is to make sure that your vocal cord swelling isn/t due to a serious problem.  An ENT doctor can take a look at your vocal cords directly.  To control reflux, you need to change your diet (just look up gerd online), followed by medication if that does not work.  If you smoke, then quitting now will help as well. Finally, rest your vocal cords when you can and avoid yelling.

Ask doc.: I think you should talk to the doc who looked at your vocal cords.  If you are looking at your own vocal cords all bets are off.

Possible vocal cord: If you have lpr, this can trigger vocal cord dysfunction- a condition wherein the vocal cord paradoxically  closes up when you try to breathe in . Usually the shortness of breath occurs in 5 mins or less after exertion. You need to control the LPR then consider seeing an ENT and/or speech therapist if the problem fails to resolve.  It may take weeks

See your doc: Large thyroid nodules should be biopsied to rule out possibility of cancer. See your doc to get this done. If you already have compressive symptoms, surgery is an option for you as well. Good luck.

strep test was neg.. doctor thought my vocal cords were swollen due to coughing. if thats the case why would my ear,throat, neck & shoulders be aching?

Sore: Although your strep test was negative, there are lots of viral processes that can still cause symptoms of ear, throat and neck pain.  Make sure you check on your strep culture.  Fluids, rest ibuprofen and I think extra vitamin C good.  You are in your 20's.  If you continue to feel tired and run down check mono in a week or so.

hoarse for 3mos saw ent twice swollen vocal cords/tonsils but no diagnosis. throat feels tight, swollen, constricted, some food gets stuck in throat ?

Tight throat: Surprised your ENT doctor wasn't able to figure out what's going on. If food is getting stuck in your throat, that is not good. Highly recommend you see your ENT doctor again one more time or see another one for second opinion if the first one is not able to help you.
