Not usually.: Over eating combined with a very poor oral hygiene, infected gums,or oral infections,throat infections,ear infections, which can be passed on through salivary ducts to salivary glands can lead to salivary gland infections, &amp; hence the swelling.The other reason can be salivary stones,if the block the ducts. At meal time, when salivary glands produce saliva,the glands swell up.

Why?: I am not sure that i understand your question or why you are asking it.  There are many salivary glands in your head and mouth, both large and small.  If they are swollen, they would be larger than normal.  I am not sure if you feel enlarged salivary glands or perhaps swollen lymph nodes which are very different.  Please either give us more information or see your physician or an oral surgeon.
