: You probably should have it evaluated so you could be on antibiotics as soon as possible. You could not have that diagnosed without evaluation.

swollen "node" on mastoid bone. small (.5 cm or less), stable, firm/rubbery feeling, fixed in place, painless. it has been there 8 months. worrisome?

No: A small rubbery node on the mastoid that has not grown in 8 months is no cause for concern. It is probably due to some benign issue with your scalp. It may be as simple as dandruff.

mastoid bone became swollen and painful to touch 2 days ago. redness & pain went away overnight.it is still a hard bump though. what is it?

See your doctor: After your doctor has taken a look she will advise if you need dental follow up, biopsy or antibiotics.  She will also get a full history to find out if trauma was involved.

: If this girl has history of otitis media then mastoiditis can't be ruled out. At least she has been evaluated by a doctor. However, if symptoms persist or get worse in the next 72 hours, she needs to be reevaluated. Good luck.

Lymph nodes that are: Small, not growing and stable in any part of the body are mostly benign. Lymph nodes are responsible for filtering any infection, inflammation around the area involved or it's a sign of tumor itself. Always follow up with your dr for any concerns. Take care!

Bones.: Everyone has non-movable very hard bumps behind the ears. Swollen glands move around within the skin, over the bone. They are soft and usually smaller than 1cm in size.

the bone behind my left ear is swollen and very painful like a burning sensation. have a lump where ear meets jaw. could this be a mastoid bone infect?

Unlikely: It is impossible to have a mastoid infection without a middle ear infection. The tendons of the large neck muscles attach on the mastoid bone and you could have either a tendonitis or myositis.  The lump where the ear meets the jaw could be the parotid gland tail.  See an ENT doctor for a specific diagnosis.

: ItIs most likely a small lymph node. These do arise in the area of the mastoid bone if it gets swollen and red it could be fighting some type of infection maybe from a hair follicle or skin

No: Once the bone is removed it smooths over but does not grow back as the mastiod process.

If you son sustained:  blunt trauma to the temporal bone or piercing trauma to the ear, take him to a hospital-based Emergency Room immediately where physicians can examine him, obtain needed radiographic studies &amp; call in any surgeons needed, like an ENT specialist &amp;/or neurosurgeon, depending on the findings. Do not delay. The doctors will tell you what needs to be done after they assess &amp; stabilize him.
