i have a very sore little toe on my left foot. its very red, sensitive to touch, itchy and rather swollen. i am unsure as to what it is?

Sprain/fracture/infe: This could be several pathologies. One a toe sprain from hyperflexion or extension(turf toe). Another could be a fracture. As long as the toe is not displaced a buddy splint will be fine. Lastly a soft tissue infection with a possible athletes foot skin disease. Hope this helps answer your question.

Infection: Sounds like maybe a skin lesion like a corn has developed an infection. There are other possibilities but its always best to consider the worst case scenario and have a doctor look at that as soon as possible.

Thank : Thank you for your excellent description of your problem.  I also love when there is a photo, however the link you provided didn't lead to a photo, but an error.

But from your description, i'd say you have an onychia, which is a little infection along the base of the toenail, probably from irritation during the run.  The typical scenario is a tiny blister forms from irritation.  With continued irritation, the blister breaks and bacteria invade to produce a small, localized infection.

It's not serious, and unless there is overt redness, heat and swelling or a pocket of pus, it will probably subside on its own (assuming you're in good health, not a diabetic, no poor circulation, etc.).  Keep it covered with a band aid, especially when you run.  Warm water soaks will help too.  If you keep getting this, you may want to get some roll foam to cover your toe while you run to prevent irritation to the area.

In rare occurrences, the nail needs to be removed to allow pus to drain, but this hardly ever is needed.

my husband is 34 and im good health overall. his left foot was swollen the other day and is less swollen now but still bigger than normal 2 days later. ankle is a little swollen too. no pain or redness or any other symptoms. when should he go to dr?

ASAP: One sided swelling of any extremity, without a history of trauma, can be indicative of an underlying problem. (infection, vascular problem, lymphatic blockage, Thrombosis) You should see a Dr. A thorough history and exam can provide insight as to what the underlying cause could be and treatment.

i suffer from a back injury compression fracture and chronic pain. my left foot felt swollen tonight in past cold and numb a little why? what do i do?

Compression fracture: Often when there is some nerve impingement there is a feeling of swelling.  The numbness also signals possible nerve root impingement.  I do not know what level your compression fracture is or the percent compressed.  I would seek the attention of a neurosurgeon for evaluation and possible treatment.

See a podiatrist: You could have an infection, you could be delivering a blister from shoe irritation, you could have arthritis.

Best to see a podiatriast for evaluation.

Plantar fasciitis: Is most likely cause. Try more supportive shoes and inserts as well as stretching and ice therapy. If still a problem or this gets worse, see podiatrist.

Look at your: SHOES first...then consider a hands on examination  Sounds like some degenerative changes in your metatarsal joints (=Metatarsalgia)
