Tongue lymph tissue : Tonsils are lymph tissue generally & part of the lymphatic system of the  immune system.  Swollen lingual tonsils,  at the base of the tongue, may indicate some type of allergic or immune issue.  
Keep a diary:  food, drinks & toothpaste (flavors) could trigger an immune response.
Gastric reflux or sinus drainage could affect this lymph tissue also.  
Sleep breathing problems could be involved.

Call Doctor: Can be caused by an infection such as strep or mono or severe allergic response.  The type of infection/condition  will dictate treatment.  Breathing may be affected and can make sleep apnea more severe.  Should see M.D. Right away for proper diagnosis and treatment.

i have gastritis and oesophigitis and swollen lingual tonsils. need a uk anti inflammatory for tonsils. any  advice please?

Gargle: Start with a warm salt water gargle. That will reduce swelling and clear mucus off of the tonsils. If that doesn't provide enough relief then it is reasonable  take paracetamol for a couple of days for pain relief (but it doesn't reduce inflammation).

Probably not but...: You really need to have an exam if you have been sick for 5 months.

See your ent: If your history is 2 months of unilateral swelling  i suggest an evaluation w your local ent.

33/f swollen & painful right lingual tonsil. 3rd round of antibiotic.if i don't respond to this med. ent wants to remove it. is this surgery dangerous?

Not likely: Tonsillectomies are done regularly without complications.  As with all surgeries, there is always some risk involved, but overall, this is a safe and common surgery.

?strep throat: You should see your doctor to have throat culture and probably treated for strep throat.

both sides of my lingual frenulum and below under my tongue, it is very red, swollen and intermittently painful. started 3 days ago out of no where, with no improvement yet. its like an oval on each side. can it just be irritation, dry mouth, etc?

: Possibly just irritation, but more likely related to infection or oral problem. See your regular Dr for initial evaluation. You may need a specialist. Would worry about infection, STD, salivary gland obstruction and other causes.

i have a swelling in back of tongue, one side. is it the lingual tonsil? can you see the tonsils without special equipment?  why would one side swell

May be infected: Yes you can see the tonsils without special equipment if you are able to control your tongue and get it out of the way. The tonsils swell in response to infections. If one side is swollen there may be an infection on that side of the face, a tooth or gum infection, or the tonsil itself could be infected. It may also be that the swelling is not a tonsil but a gland. Have a professional check it out.
