i had mono at 19. since then i've had a string of swollen, hard lymph nodes under my right arm. twice in my life the largest one (.5cm) would swell, get a little red and tender for a few weeks, then calm again. i'm 58 now. should i be concerned?

: Have you discussed your concern with your PCP.  What are the  circumstances in which the lymph nodes swell.  Have you noticed swollen lymph nodes elsewhere on your body.  Are the nodes freely movable.  Please, discuss all of your concerns with your PCP.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

Nodes: Often time with many types of infections many body part, specifically nodes get inflamed.

Yes.: This is probably the most common cause of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. After a patient recovers from the uri, the lymph nodes should cease to enlarge, and then gradually shrink down to their normal size (this sometimes can take 4-6 weeks). If the lymph nodes do not follow this pattern, then you may need further evaluation.

MD visit: Hopefully is not serious but could be.  You need a good physical exam.  Your doc will decide if further workup (like scans or a biopsy) is needed.  Best to you.

can you get swollen glands or lymph nodes if you were choked or somebody was squeezing hard on your neck?

Yes: It could irritate the lymph nodes in your neck causing swelling.  more concerning is why was someone choking you?  This should be reported as an assault.  Please do not let someone get away with hurting you.  No one has the right to do that EVER.  Please be sure you are safe.  Avoid contact with anyone who would do that to you.  If you are/feel unsafe call for help, contact local police.

Lymph nodes: Swelling of lymph nodes is common with any infection. If they stay swollen then you should be evaluated and have some routine blood work done.

Diff possibilities: Tender is usually a good sign & if you have a few relatively small tender lymph nodes & you struggle with allergies or have a cold,  those could cause it. However if you have a very lg or hard, immobile node(s) it's best to get that checked out. You might also want to check for swollen lymph nodes elsewhere in the body & if you find some, that would be another reason to get checked out.

How long?: How long have you have those nodes? If they are recent and occured with an infection, they will resolve on their own, if they have been there for a while, they need to be checked by your doctor.
