Depends on injury: Swelling may last a long time following a an injury.  An x-ray can show if there is an underlying fracture.  You may have a soft tissue injury if it is just a sprain and may have damaged the muscle, tendon, or ligaments in the area.  Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

He needs to see MD: He probebly has a cellulitis infection due to the bite.He should see his doctor asap or go to the emergency dept, as hamay need antibiotics if that is the case.

Sprains: ..can be hard to treat.  Rest, ice to decrease swelling when it happened, anti-inflammatory meds and original rest of the area are very important.  Since it is not healing timely, it is best to get it evaluated so any testing can be done to assure it is treated appropriately.  Best wishes.

Xray it: Because there are swelling and extending pain, i recommend an xray to check for fracture as you want to avoid increasing and possible permanent damage. In the meantime keep off the foot , ice it off and on and elevate the leg until your md examines you.

Many possibilities: Some causes of swelling of the ankles can include systemic problems such as hypertension, and problems with the kidneys and localized issues such as arthritis, infection, lymphatic obstruction, blood clots, varicose veins, trauma (fracture, sprain, tendonitis) and side effects to medication.  Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

Be seen: If you are still having significant pain and swelling for months after an injury to your ankle, I would recommend you be seen and examined for an accurate diagnosis.  The most likely thing we will see with that mechanism is a contusion in the bone, but these are usually pretty much resolved by 8-12 weeks at the most.  There may be a more serious component to your injury.
