my mother has been diagnosed with stage 3a limited small cell lung cancer. she is starting her chemotherapy next week along with radiation after her 2nd round of chemo. she's 71 and has copd also. what do you think her 2-5 yr survival rate is....?

20-40% at 2 years: There is pretty extensive data on patients with small cell lung cancer (sclc). The vast majority will respond to treatment, and also will recur. Data from the literature quote 20-40 % of limited sclc survive to 2 years and 10-13% to 5 years. Good luck, i hope she is one of those! i assume you are referring to limited stage sclc; stage 3a is used in non-sclc and the numbers are different.

Depends on stage: Survival for lung cancer is stage specific.  Early stage has better survivalmthen late stage.  However if you are being treated for lung cancer, the important thing is to stay positive and optimistic, regardless of the stage.

Quality of life: If what you are describing is the case, then you cannot expect a cure, but chemo may give you an extra year or two of reasonably good health. Is there something you want to do? If not, I'd be surprised and frankly disappointed. A frank discussion is in order with your physicians and those who love you. Then whatever decision you make will be the right one.

Depends on a number : Of factors. Discuss with your team of docs (orthopod, oncologist, pcp & any other specialitist that you may need). Chemo/radiation are generally best options, with some surgical procedure to stabilize a broken or a bone that is weakened (but not yet broken). The idea is to improve the quality of life for as long as possible. Survival is dependent on cancer type and its response to the meds..

Not good: The overall 5 year survival for gastric cancer is 10-21%, after successful surgery the survival is 24-57%, but most patients recurred after 3 years.  Stage IV gastric cancer survival rate is in the single digits.

Ask his Oncologist: This is a question which requires you(patient) to visit with a medical Oncologist who can then guide you about prognosis and the choice of chemotherapy which may help the patient. It may still be curable but the odds of more trouble ahead are high and should be kept in mind as we do not have very good chemotherapy for treatiig advanced stomach cancer.

Confused???: I do not know what you mean by colon cancer fluid in stomach are you talking about ascites which is a free fluid in the abdomen or there is an abnormal connection because of the cancer between the colon and the stomach either way this is an advance cancer if surgery is not an option chemotherapy do not do much for colon cancer
simply follow your doctor instruction  and hope for the best.
