Intent: Assisted suicide uses a standardized dosage of medication to ease someone into death.  Done properly there are extensive controls, examinations and doctor certifications needed to accomplish this.  Overdosing is usually an accident and although harm may be done, the intent was accidental.

NOT SIMPLE: There are many reasons why people avoid medication - fear, stigma, hopelessness, lack of information, etc. You husband needs help to express what is holding him back before he will change his behavior. Psychotherapy may help him be open about this and change.

Accepted Answer

No: There is no evidence that medications used to treat adhd lead to suicidal thinking or acts in children or adolescents.  However, strattera (atomoxetine) is a medication approved for adhd that is more related to antidepressants, and as such it has been given a warning of suicidal ideation as it is grouped with that kind of medicine.

Sadly- not much: Even doctor's cannot control some people, despite all of our expertise. It is very common for those with borderline personality to make gestures toward self harm. It is also common for friends and family to try and help, often leading to frustration and resentment. A good book for you to read is: codependency no more by melody beattie. Nice of you to care about your friend.

You must find a way: If you attempted suicide while on medication, the medication may not have been the right one for you. A small % of people become more depressed on some medications. Consult with a psychiatrist and tell them what happened and which medication you were on. Also the combination of psychotherapy and medication has been found to be the most beneficial for depression. Don't give up get help.

: You need to see a psychiatrist urgently or you better admit yourself to a behavior health center.

Lithium may help: SSRI are usually used for the symptoms you describe, however, SSRI may increase suicidal ideas. Lithium has shown to decrease suicidal ideas in depressed patients. Talk to a Psychiatrist about this treatment.

For obvious reasons: We don't wish to opine on means of suicide in a public forum. This question would best be asked of the coroner who consulted, or your own personal physician. Every suicide is painful, if not for the victim, then to varying degrees by the survivors. Best wishes.

Healthy habits: Take a break in your mind.  Learn to meditate, listen to calming music, or  to guided imagery.  Take a walk in nature.  Start aerobic exercise.  Look to a spiritual power and pray for release.  It depends on what works best for you.  Try these out to see how it makes you feel.  The key is to be 'addicted' to this positive activity instead, so that the urge is to turn to this activity when stressed.

how do you tell the difference between a drug overdose from suicide attempt?

Often impossible: Someone taking a sedating drug may unthinkingly take too many pills. We need to look at the life circumstances and what else the person was saying and doing to determine whether there was intent to harm oneself.
