before/during my period i get really sudden sharp pain in my spine, in the middle to lower area. what causes that exactly? how can i help it?

Hormonal changes: It is not due to anything being broken torn or herniated. Antiinflammatories help.

Probably fine...: If you didn't get any numbness or tingling in the lower extremities you're probably ok. Either pulled a tight muscle and created spasms or tore a ligament in the spine. Sounds bad but it is usually something benign, a partial tear that heals perfectly fine on its own. Warm compresses. Gentle massage. Give it 1-3 days. Make sure to try to keep it moving.

Low back pain: Most likely causes are sprain and strain. Given your age, costochondritis is also a possibility.Less likely are herniated discs, since you don't describe a referred or neurogenic type of problem.

Doubt relationship: Unfortunately, given the information provided, it's hard to arrive to a particular diagnosis. Although, the pain may be related, if i just knew more about that, given the different anatomical locations it's in and the absence of connection between them, i doubt there is a relationship, but again i may be totally missing  the point.

See a physician: You should consult your physician for rapid weight loss and pain in your spine. Multiple medical conditions can do that  and the work may include a blood count , chemistries ct or MRI scans . Do not delay see your doctor . Once we find the cause it'll be easier to treat with the right medication..

Pinched Nerve: It sounds like pressure on one of the nerves in your neck. This could be caused by a neck injury or herniated disc Such pressure would use pain that would radiate down the rm and up the neck

Several possibilitie: If it's directly along the spine, could be disc injury, herniation, torn ligament, tumor (not likely as these tend to be dull aching), or commonly a locked vertebra (higher up, could be rib).A good history & physical, esp. Hands-on osteopathic exam could elucidate cause leading to proper treatment.Simple, sharp pain is frequently easily diagnosed & fixable by osteopathic manipulation right in office.
