That is excessive: 5 nosebleeds in one day seems excessive and must be very disruptive.  You should see an otolaryngologist for an assessment and possible cautery.  Most are caused by dry nasal lining causing fragile vessels, but there are other things that can cause frequent bleeds that would need to be treated.

Nosebleeds: Nosebleeds usually stop on their own with simple care unless there are underlying problems like high blood pressure, treatment with blood thinners, or underlying blood coagulation disorders like hemophilia. Most patients would present for care long before they 'bleed out'. In some cases the elderly and/or demented may have ongoing bleeding and significant blood loss.

Very common: Usually from allergies, picking on the nose, blowing nose too hard, constant rubbing etc. As long as there are no associated signs and symptoms like bruising , prolonged bleeding , cuts slow to heal, petechia or getting tired easily and he is healthy, then just treat the allergy. If + for above, need to see doctor to run test  to rule out blood disorders.

Reactive: People w/o high blood pressure can transiently have high #s w/stress. Most nosebleeds will stop with 15 minutes of continuous direct pressure--means no peeking, checking, whatever. Use a clock and time it. Tilt head back a little may help, cold pack over nasal bridge may help. Once stopped, have afrin spray in case restarts to shrink vessels. Er visit only if two 15 min trials fail or get dizzy.

Many possibilities: The most common source of a nose bleed is from the front/ bottom part of the nasal septum.  
This is a vascular area and some people have prominent blood vessels in this area. The blood vessels may break with a nose blow, dryness, or picking at this area.  But there are other more serious causes such as hypertension, growth and even a malignancy.  See an ENT doctor.

Stop them, eval. why: Nosebleeds occur for a variety of reasons. In children, 90% of nose bleeds occur in the front  near the nostrils, which is why pinching the nose helps stop it, since pressure is applied. In adults, it can also be posteriorly, so pinching helps in fewer cases. Lean head forward, not backward, so you do not swallow the blood. May need scope to evaluate for nasal mass and blood work to check if okay.
