With that said, a few other common causes of pain and bumps in that area includes swelling of the submandibular gland's, rannula, and thyroglossal duct cysts. These can be intermittent, and chronic or acute in nature.

Submental Node: When a submental node pops up, suspect a problem with a central tooth in the lower jaw or a recent trauma to the lips or gums or cheeks. Have you been bitten by an insect / spider? Have you any other nodes? If the swelling does not go away in four week or you develop fevers, chills, or develop any local symptoms, go see your doctor.

Yes.: A lymph node Nader the chin is a sub mental node.  Lymph nodes commonly enlarge when fighting infections, so this common with a cold or flu and not something of concern.

The size is importan: A 6 y/o may have a submental node or two normally, but they are usually small, smaller than 1/2 inch. When it is infected, it may be red and/or tender. It is extremely rare for a small child to have a cancer in the submental node only. A viral infection as the cause is a possibility. It may be a lymph node, but maybe a thyroglossal cyst if it is in the midline. I would have a doctor take a look.

Lymphoma: Hodgkins lymphoma spreads in regional lymphnodes first and then spreads to another area. Non Hodgkins lymphoma is more general and sporadic. Submental lymphnode can be involved with either.
