Tinnitus treatment: We check for underlying causes such as earwax occluding the ear canals, hearing loss due to history of loud noise exposure or age-relates, medications, high blood pressure, head/neck injuries, head/neck tumors, TMJ disorder,  etc.
Treatments will depend of whether the cause of tinnitus is treatable or not.

Tinnitus: What you are describing is tinnitus.Tinnitus is very common and usually but not always associated with hearing loss (usually a high frequency loss). I would recommend getting a hearing test at your local ent's office. Unfortunately, there is no cure for tinnitus.

Drying and antibioti: Swimmer's ear is usually a topical infection inthe ear canal. Not the ear drum.  Dry the fluid and put in antibiotic drops.

No: I wouldn't recommend it. Vicks keeps things moist, and fungi like moisture.

Probable: allergies!! should be evaluated ( what's inside your PILLOWS!!!!)
Use a anti-histamine/decongestive at bedtime (eg Xyrtec -D)

how long can an ear cold last and what's the best treatment for it?

Depends what it is..: An "ear cold" does not have a strict medical definition and i would suspect could represent one of 2 things.  One is a true bacterial infection of the middle ear(otitis media) which often can require antibiotics to clear up.  Another would be eustachian tube dysfunction in which a cold or allergies can block the drainage tube of the ear and this can last until the cold resolves or longer 1-2 weeks.

when in bed any treatment suggestions please?

The hissing: is called tinnitus and it is a common result of high altitude flying and the effect of air pressure changes on the inner ear hearing "system" (which also helps us with balance) Try chewing gum during take off and landings!

Treat the cause: Treatment to resolve ear pain depends on the cause. If it is directly related to the ear, as with an external or middle ear infection, then a topical and/or oral antibiotic or anti-fungal is needed. 
Infection or inflammation in the throat, molars or base of tongue region can present with ear pain.
See your primary doctor or ENT specialist.
