why does my nose get stuffed at night?

: Most common reasons are dry air in your room, more nasal congestion if you have rhinitis (either acute or chronic) due to more blood flow and higher venous congestion in supine position and you pay more attention to your body during sleep, i.e. less interaction at night.

Nasal Congestion: It certainly could be.  It could also be allergies or something that you are sensitive to, like smoke, fumes or pollution.

my 3 yr old, finished antibiotic for tonsillitis 2 days ago. since last night she has temp with a stuffed nose, calpol is helping, is this related?

Accepted Answer

Fever: Most probably she got penicillin/amoxicillin for tonsillitis (if not allergic to) which takes care of tonsilitis. Fever with stuffy nose is usually caused by viral illness. Give fever med. Only when temp. Is 101 f or above. Make sure she drinks enough fluid. Can give otc diphenhydramine/benadryl for congestion. If not better in 5-7 days, make a folow up visit with her pediatrician.

my son has had croup for 6 days. he is still coughing very bad, stuffed nose, watery eyes. we use a vaporizer every night. he coughs so hard he vomits?

Croup: How old is your son?  If this is the first episode, no real issues. If it is recurrent he should be checked for reflux. First episode, check with the pediatrician. A steroid burst will reduce the inflammation  and shorten the course. When he is coughing really hard take him into the bathroom and run the hot shower and the humidity will help stop the cough. If it is cold outside, take him there.

can you get a cold if infected with toxoplasmosis?i cleaned cat pee on the floor 2 days back & later that night i woke up with stuffed nose,eye burns & cough.i didnt clean the pee wearing gloves or mask.i used tissues.symptoms still presist?

: Toxoplasmosis  can cause fever and muscle aches and cold like symptoms. Most of the time it is asymptomatic. From your description it does not sound as if you have that. It is always to take precaution with hand washing etc. if worried.

: I don’t think your symptoms are related to cleaning the cat urine.  Toxoplasmosis oocytes are can be transmitted via cat feces (poop), not urine (pee).  Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Sweating at night: In your part of the world there are many things that can cause night sweats.  Please discuss with your team.  They will know what is going around in your neck of the woods.

Saline & bulb syring: Saline "little noses" nasal drops and a blue rubber bulb syringe generally do the trick.  For the rare significantly blocked nose, one drop of afrin and wait 20 minutes, then try the saline and bulb syringe.  Don't use afrin more than twice a day, and not for more than 3 days.  This should be done rarely.  If you use it too much it will stuff up the baby's nose.

Depends on cause: The nose can be congested from allergy, medications, polyps, and structural problems.  Nasal steroids and antihistamine/decongestant preparations can help with allergy, nasal steroids sometimes reduce polyps.  If it is structural such as a deviated septum, large turbinates, or polyps then surgery is often beneficial.  Suggest seeing an ENT physician for a comprehensive evaluation.
