Tylenol (acetaminophen): Typically tylenol (acetaminophen) should be ok.  However recommended daily dose is less than 3000mg unless you already have liver disease at which point i would discuss with your doctor if you should take this at all.  The typical Ibuprofen and Naproxen over the counter should be less likely to cause bleeding.  Aspirin is most likely otc med to cause bleeding.

why can i not get higher doses of painkillers over the counter?

Accepted Answer

Many painkillers are: potentially addictive or lethal in high doses, therefore, they are highly regulated. If you are not getting relief, speak to a physician to find out why you are in so much pain. Get the cause treated. If the doctors cannot alleviate it enough consider learning hypnosis for pain management. It is easy  to learn, is not addictive and can be very helpful.

Good joint levels: Aleve (Naproxen) is a good one.  The drug distribution is noted to be substantial in synovial joints.   It is a good anti-inflammatory with good analgesic effects.

Anti- nausea: Ginger is excellent for upset stomach including nausea from motion sickness, menstruation, chemotherapy &amp; morning sickness.

See a doctor: First of all congratulations for making the first step of recognizing you have a problem and wanting to do something about it. As far as withdrawal, it really depends on specifically what and how much you have been using. It is better to taper rather than going cold turkey. A doctor can also help you get connected to a support system so you can stay off. Keep up the good work.

Since you are: taking Proton Pump inhibitors (eg Prilosec) i assume you have a stomach issue thus many OTC pain medications should be avoided (eg IBUPROFEN, MOTRIN, ALEEVE ) You can use Dramamine with any of these (Dramamine is an anti-histamine) I would suggest TYLENOL (acetaminophen) in the higher strength every 8 hours is your best OTC "bet")

Pain management: You can buy a substance called turmeric over the counter. The other option for pain control includes the use of cold packs on the area or an over-the-counter gel for pain such as capsaicin or Voltaren. The gels are a good way of treating pain in the area where they are applied and they do not affect your stomach like the tablets.

Not aware of any: There is no effective pain killer other than tylenol (acetaminophen) and NSAIDs OTC.  Since there are now newer drugs available for MS treatment, you should talk to your neurologist again about your condition.

KIDNEYS AND PAIN: IF YOUR KIDNEYS ARE WEAK THEN ANY OTC PAIN PILLS OTHER THAN TYLENOL CONTAIN NSAID'S AND THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS NSAID'S CAN CAUSE MORE KIDNEY DAMAGE.  I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU SEE A PAIN SPECIALIST

Ibuprofen 600mg: Ibuprofen 600mg every 4-6 hr.  Don't take it if you are pregnant or have kidney problem.  See your dentist right the way!
