Maybe &amp; maybe not: Dark-colored stools may result from iron supplements, foods you eat (like a lot of spinach), substances (like peptobismol), but most significantly suggests bleeding. When blood is denatured by acid in your stomach, as from ulcers, stools will turn tarry ("melena"). Blood may also be ingested from nose bleeds, bleeding gums... Persistent melena (without obvious cause) &amp; symptoms warrants evaluation

Bowel irregularity: Sometimes the bowels get upset. Need more information, Age, part of world, other meds, diseases.
Usually bowel consistency changes with diet. Have you eaten differently ?  Any seafood? Shellfish? Water contamination, out of country?
Need more information.
Probiotics by mouth at the pharmacy are useful for getting the gut back on tract after a normal doctor exam.

Hello. : Hello. Black, sticky, smelly bowel movements can be caused melena which is due to gastrointestinal bleeding. Hard balls of stool can be due to constipation and can mean that there is not suffiecient fiber or liquid intake as well as insufficient exercise.  Some medications like peptobismal can also give you black bowel movements. Based on the info provided you can decide whether or not you should be evaluated.

Thoughts...: Can't say whether or not it's a worm, but the food you eat contributes to the stool's consistency and appearance.  Foods with high insoluble fiber (celery) can cause stringy things in stool.  Your doctor will probably consider doing some stool studies if concerned, especially if you've been travelling or living abroad.  Best of luck!

If he: Is one year old, it may be little more than a food that didn't agree with him, or a virus. If he's younger, closer to 2-3 months, it could be milk protein allergy.

Parasites: Most parasitic infections in the usa are uncommon and very few will produce the type of structure you have described.  Although doubt that these are worms, suggest that to make you feel more at ease, that you see a doctor and provide a stool specimen for examination.

: Stools come in different colors, shapes and consistencies depending on the foods and drinks one takes. Brown pasty stool with no associated symptoms is nothing to worry about. A little more drinking water might be needed, that's all. But if one remains concerned, see Gastroenterologist.

Bowel: Loose stools although not described as diarrhea can by a sign of infection if these symptoms are new.  Other causes for loose stools would be processes that decrease transit time such as stimulant (excess coffe, tea or caffeinated soda) or hyperthyroidism. Irritable bowel syndrome would be a likely problem too.

Not sure: Black stools can be due to medications that contain either iron or bismuth, eating certain foods (like black licorice), Gastrointestinal bleeding or ingestion of charcoal.
