Usually not: Generally, we swab a throat to check for strep bacteria when a patient has symptoms, and don't swab people who have no symptoms. That is because we know there are plenty of carriers without symptoms, and we do not treat carriers. That said, in unusual cases, we do swab people and treat them merely for carrying strep throat bacteria, but those would be the unusual cases.

: Hard to know. We do know that some (~5%) are asymptomatic carriers off &amp; on year round. There are some reports of as many as 30% carrying strep without symptoms in peak seasons. Given that they are symptom free &amp; appear to rarely get true infections, it is hard to quantify the duration of your "average" carrier state.

The average carry rate by asymptomatic people has been quoted as 5% in the summer and upwards of 25% during the winter.Some of these carriers are likely treated for strep when they have simple viruses that cause symptoms as only blood testing could confirm a true infection.

STREP EXPOSURE: Whenever you are exposed to strep throat infection, screening should be done to all contacts and get properly treated so it will not recur.

Yes: Strep throat is a problem that can arise repeatedly, many times in a season or year. It is not like chickenpox, where you get immunity after you have it. A strep carrier is just as likely to pass it on as a symptomatic strep patient.

Perhaps: Being a carrier means that you have the bacteria without having symptoms (sore throat, fever, rash, headache, abdominal pain). A carrier is actually a benign condition. If you want to be sure, ask your physician to do a throat culture for strep.

Testing: Strep carrier status occurs when an individual tests positive for the strep a germ on multiple occasions but remains asymptomatic. (lack of physical illness & lack of a blood test showing an immune response)an estimated 5% of folks are year round carriers & as many as 25% may be transient carriers in the winter.Carriers do pose some risk to susceptible friends & family.

Treatment: You should be treated with antibiotic for 10 -14 days and after treatment have culture from throat to be sure is negative but if positive it is resistant to antibiotic that you use so antibiotic should be Chang and to be treated and have culture after treatment again.
