How long can somone be a carrier of strep throat?

Hard to know. We do know that some (~5%) are asymptomatic carriers off & on year round. There are some reports of as many as 30% carrying strep without symptoms in peak seasons. Given that they are symptom free & appear to rarely get true infections, it is hard to quantify the duration of your "average" carrier state.
