i have had a bloody discharge since early november. i went to the dr and he gave me antibiotics to stop the bleed. they did not work. i am not pregnant and was on the three month injection. i stopped it this month, but i am still bleeding?

"bloody discharge": Antibiotics will generally not be a treatment for abnormal vaginal bleeing.  If the bleeding is after sexual activity, it may be from an inflammed cervix, and may require hot or cold cautery to cause regrowth of normal cervical tissue.  If your menstrual cycles have been unpredictable on the depoprogeserone "shots", this problem should stop soon.  See your gyn provider with questions about this.

husband had bacteremia sepsis,took 7 out of recommended 14 day iv antibiotic. whats the chance of infection coming back since he stopped a week early.

A slippery slope: When you stop antibiotics for sepsis before the  recommended  ending date unless his physician made the decision to stop based on clinical and lab parameters not mentioned in your question.  If the decision to stop was against  medical advice then there is a significant risk involved.   There is no way to assign a numerical value to the risk but it is certainly one I would not take.

It depends...: ...on which antibiotic. A day or two for most, up to 2 weeks for long acting ones like azithromycin (Z-pak).

Overdose: Occassionally multiple medications are prescribed to treat disease or medical conditions.  Medications should be taken only as prescribed by a qualified physician to avoid adverse effects.  If a particular regimen was recommended, and taken as advised, benefit likely outweighs risk.  People should never take medication that is expired or wasn't prescibed to them to avoid complications and toxicity

See below : I'm not sure what type of penicillin you are taking. Because most penicillins have very short half lives they are usually taken 4 times a day or every 6 hours if you have normal kidney function.

Dx: What diagnosis were you given to be on an antibiotic?  Need more information. Seems your bloated before the antibiotic started?  Diahrea? Constipation?  Fever? Pain?  Need more information. Go back to see the doctor who gave you the antibiotic

YES: Antibiotics are highly successful in treating early lyme disease; the earlier treatment begins after infection the better.  However, many doctors give inadequate treatment, such as Doxycycline 100 mg 2x/day for 10 days.  Ilads, the professional organization of lyme specialists, advises Doxycycline 200 mg 2x/day x 1 month (or similar). See

Probably nothing: Why would you need to drink alcohol so much that you could not stop drinking until your antibiotic course was completed?

is it possible to treat an abcess early with antibiotics and prevent it from getting worse?

Accepted Answer

Yes: At times, abscesses can be treated with antibiotics and warm compresses, some people stil use drawing salves as well, and that can be curative.  If not any better, the abscess may need definative incision and drainage (I&D) to get treated effectively.
