If you think you have an ulcer, don't wait for it to become overtly painful before you seek medical evaluation.

Many causes: Aside from commonly used medication such as nsaids (ibuprofen/motrin/aleve) and aspirin, smoking and alcohol use, you should also be evaluated for a bacteria called helicobacter pylori which has been associated with ulcers.

PPI's and avoidance: Ulcers if bleeding can be treated if they are cauterized during endoscopy.  But basic way to treat ulcer is with meds called ppi's- this is nexium, protonix, dexilant, (dexlansoprazole) prevacid, prilosec...Etc. This keeps the acid down and allows ulcer time to heal. Avoiding things that make ulcer worse also helps-like alcohol, nsaids or Aspirin or steroids  or smoking etc. If assoc w h.Pylori-treating this helps.

Yes: It depends what kind of ulcer one has. If the ulcer has not healed completely but patient feel better or symptoms free, the ulcer can come again.
