severe upper stomach pain like a vise. bad after eating, bad on an empty stomach, i think i have a ulcer. can i use dgl licorice will it stop the pain?

DGL licorice: Although an ulcer is one possible cause of your pain, there are many other potential causes also. DGL licorice would not cause your pain to resolve even if your pain is due to an ulcer. Your best bet is to see your doctor for a diagnosis of the cause of your pain. In the meantime, try omeprazole 10mg each morning. Do not take this for longer than two weeks without a diagnosis. can you get stomach pain after not eating for a while? if so, why? can you get ulcers from not eating regularly?

Acidity: Yes you can, when you don't eat the acid that is in your stomach continues to be present and can irritate your stomach. If this persists, eventually the protective layer that protects your stomach from irritation breaks down and can cause ulceration. Eat regularly and continue to follow up closely with your physician.

stomach pain after eating raw herbs, fruits and veg... pain goes away after an hour.. drinking milk also helps to sooth it.. what could it be? ulcer?

Stomach pain: Possible ulcer or gastritis. Avoid foods known to cause discomfort. Zantac (ranitidine) or Pepcid twice daily 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner may help sooth it. If no relief or worse, see doc.

Hungry stomach pain: May just be hunger pains , contractions of  stomach when haven't eaten for a while.  usually for ulcer have significant pain and even pain after eating. ,  on that spectrum is GERD with acid reflux. Could see if OTC ranitidine  or prevecid helps  f/u/ w/ doc

YES IT COULD: Ulcers bleed at some point in time if not treated. You will develop black stools. There are other causes of upper abdominal pain, so please see your doctor.

See GI: With pain that severe, you need to see a GI dr. who with an exam and most likely some diagnostic testing/procedures would be able to properly diagnose you and then the best treatment would follow.  Good luck to you.

i have a strange dull stomach pain that i associate with an ulcer, and it usually goes away with ranitidine, but now for 2 days it hasn't. any ideas?

Get evaluated : Pain that is in the upper abdomen that awakens from sleep, worse with or better with eating, radiates to the back, better with antacids or acid blocking medications could indicate an ulcer. Infection from h pylori bacteria ;/ or use of nsaids (ibuprofen etc), smoking, family history are risk factors. Symptoms of an ulcer should be evaluated by a health care provider and may warrant endoscopy.

Probably not.: ulcers take time to develop, so that is not likely to be your problem at this point. You're pain most likely was due to the anxiety of your parents fighting. If you  continue to have pain, then I would try antacids. If this doesn't work, then you may need to see your doctor. Good luck.

Yes: Ulcers are not the only cause of abdominal pain. Here are others: simply eating too much, eating certain foods that are not tolerated by your body (lactose, allergies), gallstones, pancreas inflammation, a mass, or GI tract infection/inflammation. If it persists, see your doctor.

been taking prilosec for 3weeks for ulcer. 20mg. now having stomach pain. not severe but doesn't feel like the same ulcer pain. is it the prilosec?

Accepted Answer

ulcer pain: Probably not the Prilosec but is still ulcer pain.  See your doctor to report a change in symptoms and for a recheck.  You may need a specialist to do an endoscopic exam to take a look at your esophagus and stomach.  Were you tested for h.Pylori the leading infective cause of ulcers?
