One alternative would be for your doctor to prescribe a course of metronidazole and if that doesn't solve the problem to do a detailed evaluation.

Practice safe sex.

No ....: The amount of iron absorbed may vary from day to day.  Some days it may result in a dark stool; other days not. Some people who take iron never have a dark stool.  All is good.  Make sure you understand why and for how long you are to take extra iron. Good wishes:)
