Careful Re: Dx &amp; Tx: Constipation is a diagnosis in the judgement of the person making the Dx; but this do not mean the Dx is correct or true. Treatment, even if Dx is correct, does not mean the Tx selected will necessarily be successful. There are many variables here, as usual. Thus question either the Dx and/or the efficacy of the Tx, as implemented. Medicine always trial &amp; error; focus on strategies which do work.

See below: First, increase your water intake (to a reasonable amount).  If oral laxatives aren't working, you can get a suppository from the drug store. If that doesn't work, then try an enema (also available over the counter).  If that doesn't work, then you can try magnesium citrate - be warned - you will get a stomach ache.  After that, i would go to the doctor to get evaluated.

The duration of no: Bm and degree of back up influence discomfort during relief.  Patients taking narcotics need to take biscodyl at dinner time, and have a bm at least every other day.  If no bm for &gt;3-4 days, citrate of magnesia, lactulose may save enema use, but clearing and rectal discomfort get worse the longer one waits.

Try schedule: Consider constipation a packaging & delivery issue. If the stool stays inside too long, water is extracted & the remainder dries more. Many slow movers suffer chronically & aggravate their problem by delaying or skipping a signaled emptying.Try emptying on a schedule that works with your lifestyle. Go thru the motions 2-4x daily to draw the stool down &out. Daily MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol)  softens & helps.

i took a laxative last night, it worked this morning, but i still have that  constipated feeling. why is that?

Well : Usually when someone is constipated they have a three or four large bowel movements of poop that need to be cleaned out. See a physicians in person for specific diagnosis and treatment

Increase fiber/water: It sounds like you may need to increase your dietary fiber.  Try food sources - veggies, beans, grains first.  Can add fiber supplements if needed.  Increase water intake and exercise as well.  If no improvement, then consider trying Miralax (polyethylene glycol).  See Dr if signifiant abdominal pain or worsening constipation.  Take Care!

Depends: On what you mean. Long intervals? Passing "bullets"?  Try getting rid of sugar if that is part of your diet. If it is "bullets" try a tablespoon of mineral oil bedtime or earlier. Laxatives sometimes aggravate the situation even though they work. Drink lots of pure water.

my baby is havingfsevere constipation.she is given plenty of fluids. we are forced to give her laxative and suppositorie still very painful.?

Diet change: You did not give the age of the baby. It is a very common problem and you often need o give suppositories and laxative (usually miralax, (polyethylene glycol) which is effective and safe), change diet and formula if he/she takes formula, and it still takes time. i have constipation after hysterectomy 45 days ago. if double doses of miralax or laxatives work for bowels could i still have a partial obstruction.

Unlikely: It is very unlikely to have Partial Intestinal Obstruction after Hysterectomy.And also you are moving your bowels.You can slowly cut down the dose of your laxatives and try to move your bowels on your own.But if you still need the laxatives daily consult your doctor.You also need to drink plenty fluids and fiber in your diet

Constipated?: Colonics & purges are popular but should be avoided & can not be recommended (see earlier healthtap answers). Use of irritant laxatives are safe for the short-term only. Fiber supplements, stool softeners, & lavage agents like MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) are safe. Rx drugs are available based on work-up of your cause of constipation. However, patients define "constipation" differently than doctors--what's your issue?
