Many possibilities: How big? increasing in size? painful? history of infections? history of cancer? how deep? what does it feel like? swollen lymph nodes in the area? redness to the skin? does it move or is it fixed in position? drainage? fever? itching? fatigue? Large number of possibilities, benign cyst, fatty lump (lipoma), enlarged lymph node would be common, have a doctor check it. Most serious, but rare, cancer

Lymph nodes: Doing what they are supposed to do to protect you from infections.  Don't worry about them, don't mess with them, and they will probably go away. Good luck!

Lymph nodes: It's hard to know what you mean by a "bump." if it just below the skin.. It could be an epidermal inclusion cyst. If it is deeper than the skin and larger than 2cm and you have had it for that long and/or the "bumps" are similar and deep... You need to get it checked out. Lyphoma is obviously what i would be concerned about the most... But you have provided limited information.

about 1 down from the tip of my earlobe on the sternocleidomastoid i have a lump around an apple pip size. head & neck mri 6months ago all fine!
what size are normal nodes in the neck and should i be able to feel any nodes? should i be concerned?

Depends: Normal nodes are not palpable.
You may feel the node/lump every couple of weeks, if the lymph gland doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, or lose weight, you should see a doctor. Wish you good health!

5yr old son says he has sore neck, there is a lump maybe 2 inches slightly diagonally from bottom of his ear, i think sternocleidomastoid is also sore?

Gland: This is a swollen lymph node and can be from a cold, or ear infection or tonsillitis, if it does not resolve and or if he has fever he needs to see his pediatrician

Get checked out: A lump on your sternocleidomastoid could be a lymph node.  In that case, you might have an infection or inflammation.  There are many causes of stiff neck, but in the setting of swollen lymph nodes, i would be sure to be checked out.  Meningitis can cause stiff neck, for example, and you don't want to miss that diagnosis.  I would see a doc asap.

No: SCM is located in the front @ the sternum adjacent 2 the prox sterno-clavicular joint and at the side of Ur scull behind the ear along the area of the mastoid.

Needs testing: Lumps in the thyroid can be either benign or cancerous. It is impossible to know by palpation. It needs further testing to evaluate. Please see your doctor for proper evaluation.

How do you: Know it's "on" your thyroid? Most neck lumps have nothing to do with your thyroid. Have the lump evaluated by your physician if you're concerned.
