Depends: Your definition of severe is difficult to evaluate which will influence oral or IV routes. Furthermore a penicillin allergy may effect the choice as well as community patterns and hospital based organisms. A culture is the gold standard for determining treatment but most cliicians would begin with Cephalexin or Dicloxacillin or amoxicilin/clavulonate and then Clindamycin in pcn allergic patients.

: You are correct with your concern. I'd also think twice before committing to this tx because urogenital infection with Staph epidermidis (a coag negative staph.) is very less likely. Have your prostatic and semen specimens checked for evidence of inflammation, i.e. high white cell (pus) count? You may need a second opinion and I prefer an ID doctor if the current doctor is a urologist. Good luck!

Generally MSSA infections are more easily treated with antibiotics called penicillins or cephalosporins.
MRSA infections are more resistant, and may require IV or Oral antibiotics like Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). But more details are needed before one can make a proper recommendation

If this organism was found in the culture of the knee (aspirate, synovial fluid), then its presence is more worrisome and an infectious disease specialist should be consulted on how to further evaluate and maybe treat.
