Can happen from biliary problem (liver, gall bladder, pancreas disease) or bursting red blood cells (hemolytic anemia).  Sometimes, first sign of jaundice is scleral icterus (yellowing of whites of eyes).  I imagine that is what is referred to as "white jaundice" which, to my knowledge, is not an official medical term.

Itching: Jaundice in and of itself doesn't cause a lot of problems.  People do complain of severe itching when they are jaundiced.  The most important thing to do is discover why you are jaundiced.  The cause of your skin discoloration could be very serious and have multiple other side effects.

Look in the mirror..: Jaundice is caused by elevation of bilirubin pigment in the blood.  When it reaches critical levels it starts to discolor the whites of the eyes, urine and finally skin a yellow color.  The urine turns dark like "tea".  Sometimes it causes a diffuse itch without rash before skin discoloration becomes evident.  If you think you are jaundice, see a doctor asap.  Good luck!

A week to a few mos: Essentially focusing on new born jaundice- it lasts from 1 to 2 weeks in formula fed babies. It peaks at 3 to 4 days in a term baby. In breast babies mild indirect jaundice can persist for a few months, without any harm. I recommend checking a total and direct bilirubin when jaundice persists beyond 2 weeks of age. Very high jaundice is linked to brain damage. Discuss with a physician, to be sure.
