Rib dysfunction?: May be muscle tear, costochondral inj., pericarditis, pleurisy, rib dysf. The latter often presents w/ pain (often sharp or severely achy &amp; worse w/ deep inhaling or exhaling.) See Dr. to rule out serious problem like heart/lung. If determined to be musculoskeletal,  may be treatable by osteopathic manipulation or prolo/neuroprolotherapy.Then see good osteopath for assessment.

MVA breast/back  : Seek medical attention today as soon as possible  in ER. You don't mention what type of accident or degree of impact  but you can develop delayed splenic hematoma and rupture with MVAs  as well as aortic dissections,esophageal trauma which are medical emergencies.It may be muscle strain but you don't want to miss something that is significant  .Go to an ER.

: You coughed a lot when you had the flu which can crack a rib or the costochondral joint which was not detected by a plain chest X-ray. Your pain is consistent with rib cage pain which makes you stop the sneeze due to anticipated pain. Just hold that site when you cough, sneeze or take a deep breath. Usually the pain will subside in a week or two. Take ibuprofen, as needed, if no contraindication.

A few choices: If this is a new , sudden pain , as you descibe, it could be spasm of the anterior chest muscles or intercostal (rib) muscles. Heat, stretching, and anti-inflammatory meds will help.
If the pain radiates to the back, consider intercostal neuralgia (irritation of the nerve for each rib). The rib  can also be restricted on breathing in and out (inhalation or exhalation), which would cause pain -.
