More details needed: When is the pain present, what does it feel like, are there two separate pains or is it a continuous line of pain from your hip to knee. What was the mechanism of injury? Does it hurt when you press on the area. Some diagnoses include intrinsic hip and knee arthritis/ligament/tendon injuries, bursitis, radiculopathy, soft tissue strain, etc. Basically u need to be examined by a physician.

Need examination: Something inflammatory is going on which could be anything from infectious to mechanical (i.e. piece of torn cartilage floating around joint space).  You will likely need some type of imaging study to better define the problem.  First step is a good examination by your physician.  They will determine the next course of action.

Intermittent pains: Can be very hard to sort out.  Since it comes and goes it is unlikely to be serious, but you may want to get a formal opinion if your are worried.

Injury or infection?: Did you twist your knee during your sleep?  Are you running a fever? It is difficult to comment on whats causing your knee pain. The best suggestion would be for you to get a proper examination by a doctor who can then determine the cause of the pain and treat accordingly. If you are experiencing fevers and knee swelling, this could be an infection in the joint and needs to be seen urgently

Meniscus or ligament: It could be many things and would certainly Require an in person physical exam, getting more information about when and how this pain started, and possibly imaging. Please see your primary care provider who may or may not refer you to an orthopedist.
Wrapping your knee with a compression or ace wrap, ice, ibuprofen or naprosyn, and elevation may also be helpful.

Need xray: If not improved over a couple of days and still very sharp, you need to get xrays to check for fracture. It can have serious consequences if you continue to put weight on it.
