Progesterone, B6: Pms symptoms that include fluid retention, breast tenderness, mood swings, cravings, headache r a sign of estrogen dominance.  Get some Progesterone cream at health food store.  Would be best to see a doctor who uses bio-identical hormones for this, but you can get it over the counter.  Vitamin b6 also helps fluid retention, as does celery. "fluid pills' known as diuretics r a prescription option.

TCM: Ginger root has been used in traditional chinese medicine to induce menstruation that is delayed. It has also been used in the treatment of excessively heavy periods. Recommend that you consult with an alternative medicine physician if considering use of high dose ginger to induce period. I always advise patients to also discuss use of herbals with their primary medical provider.

See your physician: This kind of question really needs a face to face evaluation with your family physician or gynecologist.  Periods can be made to come on time with use of the birth control pill, but first you need to find out if there is some condition behind those irregular periods, such as thyroid disorders (very common) and irregularity around menopause, which may indicate a problem with the uterine lining.

If you are repeatedly bleeding more frequently than every 21 days, you should see your health care provider.

Give it time: You may have irregularly-spaced periods for another year or for 20 years. It is hard to predict. One thing for sure is that a pregnancy will "reset" your periods such that you will have a different amount, duration, and frequency as you do now. You can control your cycles with birth control pills, inserts, or shots. If it doesn't bother you, then you really don't have to do anything about it now..

Possible options: Although there are no medications for which a short course will permanently stop your periods, there are some hormonal medications which, taken on a daily basis, may prevent your period from coming.  You can discuss the options with your gynecologist and try one or more of them.
