diagnosed with knee sprain & had an x-ray taken. happened when jumping. i think something may be torn. it is incredibly swollen & can't bear weight. what could be going on?

An MRI can help: If you are still having difficulty bearing weight, an MRI can help. We ned to have you seen by a Sports medicine doctor or Orthopedist or PM/R doctor right away for an updated exam and imaging. If it is negative Physical therapy is in order. In the meantime, you can go to Urgent care today for evaluation and continue rest, ice, elevation, anti-inflammatory for swelling and pain and to wrap it w/ACE.

is it normal with a sprained knee for my leg to be swollen, my toes to be tingly and my knee to keep popping?

Accepted Answer

Yes: If your knee is swollen, gravity will bring some of the fluid down to the foot causing your symptoms.  Fluid can also make the knee pop.

would your calf swell with a sprained knee?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: Swelling below the knee following an injury is common but calf swelling can also mean a dvt-clot.- or just too much sitting. If it does not improve with elevation it needs professional evaluation.

if you have a sprained knee grade one, do you need crutches or a knee brace?

Accepted Answer

Graded 1 through 3..: Sprains & strains are graded based on the number of fibers within the structure that are stretched/ torn. A grade 1 may not cause enough pain/ discomfort for you to think you need a brace/ crutches, but a brace is a good idea. The brace can protect the  joint from further damage until you have regained enough strength to protect yourself in your normal activities.

doc told me to get compression sleeve for knee sprain. is there a difference between ones that have straps vs ones that slide up your leg?

why is my knee stiffer than normal after 2 weeks of sprained knee?

Stiff: you probably have not been moving it normally because of the sprain and then pain.  Decrease motion causes tissues around the knee to tighten up abnormally.

get an exam: 'sprained knees' is a generic term for and injury to your knee. If your knee continues to hurt, swell , 'catch' etc. See an ors for an examination.Once a diagnosis is made , proper treatment can begin.

Sprain: That depends on what is sprained and the severity of injury. Minor sprain can be a few weeks. More severe injury can be months -- or never as may need surgery to fix (acl, meniscus, etc).

Whatever works...: Usually i tell my patients to utilize whatever modality works for them.

minor knee sprain of mcl now 10 weeks duration...slow to heal. will feel good, but as soon as i attempt 2 walk w/o my cane i get pain response next day...this has happened 3 times and afraid to walk on it without re-injury please advise?
