Not enough info: An ankle splint can be used technically for grade 1, 2, or even 3. So hard to answer. The splint doesn't determine the extent of the injury. The amount of ligaments and extend fof stretch or tear in the ligament more readily grades the sprain.

A leg up....: This depends on the severity of the sprain and the amount of soft tissue damage incurred from the injury. The sprain of nine years ago may have some effect, but it is hard to be sure. Post sprain physical therapy should speed the process of swelling reduction up. Ask your doctor how he is going to deal with the edema.

Ask your doctor: Ankle sprains vary in severity and if you were put into a splint it may require anywhere from 1-3 weeks depending on your type of sprain. Always consult with your doctor before removing a splint.

Ask mgr 4 alternate: There might be other tasks you can do while you heal. Ask the manager. I imagine Sonic would not like to be responsible for your doing further damage and it sounds like it is a risk. Also, I don't mean to be cavalier w/ your job - but it's not a critical first responder thing. If you don't heal well, your next 60-80 yrs quality of life could be at stake. I'd play it safe.

Worried!: Yes, you should be worried and you must contact your primary doctor. More than likely you will be referred to a foot specialist.

Sprained ankle: Yes it is completely normal.  Just continue to ice it and u can actually start moist heat (wet towel wrap) to help increase blood flow and healing to that area.

Concerned doctor: Are there any other symptoms such as redness, sweating, altered sensations?  There's always a concern about regional pain syndrome in setting of trauma. Could just be due to the resolving edema and swelling from the sprain. Keep it elevated and try to move the ankle to prevent stiffness. Stay off it as much as possible.

It : It sounds to me like she needs to be seen by your primary care physician or local emergency room physician.  She may have an infection or other problem that needs evaluation.
