See below.: If any nail is loose or detached you can cut it if it can be done safely. If in doubt, see podiatrist. Perhaps the reason that this occurred can also be ascertained and prevented.

Removal: Go see a podiatrist, they can perform a simple in-office procedure that can permanently remove the offending part of the toenail.

See dermatologist: could be trauma, fungus or other inflam skin disease such as psoriasis, etc. Suggest see dermatologist or podiatrist for eval and poss tx

Pre-diabetes to: frank diabetes transition rate varies from person to person, some of that variability is due to lifestyle.  No matter what the rate, please consider getting some support and guidance from a nutritionist or doc to make changes now.  It can be better than you think and you may prevent lots of problems in the future.  You can do it.  Peace and good health.

Damaged nail: My suggestion is to carefully cut down the detached portion of nail by clipping it. You may want to protect it with covering by bandaid.

Depends on the cause: If the cause of the split in the nail was a traumatic injury, then the nail matrix at the back of the nail could be damaged and this would cause permanent changes to the nail.  If the matrix was not involved the nail should grow out without issues.  Other reasons for a nail to split would be nutritional or metabolic.  These can be resolved with diet and supplements.  Check with your foot doctor.

Thin nail hydrate na: Thin the nail plate and hydrate the nail plate and nail bed with aquafor or similar ointment daily.  Take biotin 2000 - 3000mcg daily.

i split my toe open and cracked the top of my toenail. i've been covering it and using peroxide and neosporin. will it heal in five days?

Toenail injury: Healing depends on the size and depth of the injury, but it often takes more than 5 days.  If you develop fever, if the entire toe swells more and gets more red, or if you see increasing pus formation, a doctor needs to check this immediately.  If it was a small superficial skin injury with localized redness that doesn't spread or get worse, it is okay to watch it for now.

i only wear orthopedic flipflops &never shoes. i dont wear socks. im wondering what the scientific (phisiological?) reason my toenails are strong & never break, yet my fingernails-which im never hard on whatsoever-always break & split all my life?

: Chronic dry brittleness of fingernails is usually due to excessive dryness from repeated washing and drying of the fingernails. Whereas soft,brittle fingernails are due to excess moisture from frequent exposure to detergents and other cleansing agents. A dermatologist can evaluate you and advise you further if you still have concerns.

i'm a dancer, but i've got saddle left foot. hence when i go onto my right split, it is very pain for me. what should i do?

See physician: You should see a physician and have imaging to evaluate for stress fracture or another injury.  If the injury is soft tissue working with a therapist familiar with dancers would be very beneficial to your rehabilitation.
