Ambiguous: I am sure you can understand, but your question is perhaps the very definition of ambiguous. What tumor? What kind of surgery? Why you are not asking this of the surgeon planning the procedure? What your medical history and current status of your health is?

Well tolerated: The more modern method for pituitary tumor resection is via a transnasal endoscopic approach that is a modification of the transphenoidal approach. Although there are always risks, in experienced hands these risks are very low. Depending on the size/ tenacity of the tumor, patients generally go home in 1-3 days. They should be awake and alert within an hour or two after the surgery. Pain is low.

Wide margins.: We are beginning to find that most if not all malignant tumors arise in  a field and that many areas of normal cells around the tumor are in actuality malignant expressing tumor protein and express genetic alterations of malignancy.  To cure a tumor, wide excision hoping to excise all potentially premalignant cells are required.  This probably converts to a margin of 2-5 cm

Trans-sphenoidal: If possible, the preferred method of pituitary tumor removal is transsphenoidal-  through the nose or through the space just under the upper lip.  After entering that area, you then enter the pituitary region through the sphenoid sinus and can remove the tumor from around the pituitary gland.

Missed some?: The excision might have missed a mmicroscopic portion and it grew back.  Or, you could have grown another tumor right next to it.  Some malignant tumors can be very aggressive and recur frequently.  Either way, please return to your physician if you havent already.

Lymphoid tumors such as lymphosarcoma, myeloma aand other tumor expressing CD20 are best treated by radiation, Rituxan (rituximab) and CHOPP chemo immunotherapy.  More recently CAR- T therapy has been added to the regimen for lymphoid and CD 19 leukemias

If the tumor is benign such as a pituitary tumor or meningioma, a total cure may be achieved with surgical resection alone.Recovery may be complete depending on the location and the "collateral" injury that may ensure in reaching the tumor. Malignant brain tumors may have recovery depending on response to radiation/chemotherapy.
