Spasmodic cough: if  GERD try ranitidine / prevecid &amp;elevate head of bed . May also be post nasal drip/sinusitis  for which zyrtec prior to bed and elevation of head when sleeping may help. May be allergic zyrtec should help or asthma-may need inhaler. Could be other conditions as well, so would check CXR-sarcoid TB, masses, clots. occasionally mycoplasma- tx w zithromax .  f/u/ w/ pulmonary/ allergist.,

Cough: Could be LPR. Assuming she is drinking at least two quarts of water a day and not smoking, try prilosec, 20mg, two times a day. Could also be non-specific reactive airway disease. get room HEPA filters

Not exactly: There are certain drugs that work by blocking the action of dopamine, most of which are medications to treat psychosis or nausea (haldol, thorazine, phenergan, (promethazine) reglan) that can cause a "dystonic reaction" where the head is pulled involuntarily to one side, which would appear the same as someone with spasmodic torticollis.

Spasmodic dysphonia: Spasmodic dysphonia is a voice disorder characterized by abnormal "spasms" of the vocal cords resulting and interruptions of speech and affecting voice.  Causes of SD can arise from vocal muscle, neuromuscular junction, and inflamed laryngeal nerves.  Treatment would include speech therapy to reduce muscle tension, Botox injection into affected muscles and rarely surgery.

Other times there are genetic conditions that can cause torticollis, and sometimes there is no clear cause ("idiopathic").

Yes, : Yes, it is true. Botox injections of the larynx, in experienced hands, is considered safe, effective, well-tolerated, and the gold standard for treatment of spasmodic dysphonia. Depending on multiple factors, a normal or near-normal voice may be achieved for 2-6  months and may require a " touch-up" injection for optimal functional outcome ( in other words, its not curative, and has to be repeated when the Botox wears off). It is critical that an accurate diagnosis be made of the type of spasmodic dysphonia (sd)  you have so the treatment can be directed to the proper muscle groups. We generally break this down into adductor type ( most common- about 80%), abductor type, and mixed. Seek an experienced laryngologist  and/or neurologist (not infrequently work together in dedicated centers) with special interest/training in this.
