i've been jogging for a couple of months and reached 4 mile mark today. anyway, this week my xiphoid process and ribs have been sore.  is this normal?

It's inflammation: Congrats on reaching your 4 mile goal. It sounds like you  have what is called costochondritis. it is an inflammation of the joint between the breast bone (sternum) and the ribs. You may find that you have tenderness to touch and pain with deep breathing. Treatment includes rest, icing 5-10 minutes/day, and anti-inflammatory meds (Aleve, Ibuprofen). If you have persistent chest pain, see your doc!

See below: Xiphoidalgia (xiphoidynia) is a relatively rare syndrome that is characterized by localized discomfort and tenderness over the xiphoid process of the sternum. Symptoms are often aggravated by eating a heavy meal or bending or twisting movements; they may also be associated with heavy work or a cough. Analgesics or a local injection may help.

my xiphoid process is very tender to the touch. been that way for a year or so. there has been no impact, gal bladder or any other issues! whats wrong?

Costochondritis?: Could just be an inflammatory process of unknown cause that is responsible for your symptoms. Ask your doctor if a course of anti-inflammatory medication is appropriate. It doesn't sound dangerous. Also, make sure to get a good physical exam from your doctor as well. Hope this helps!

i have a lump a little to the right of my xiphoid process. its painful and tender to touch. i got an x-ray and said it came back clear. does that mean its not the xiphoid cartilage causing issues? what else could a lump around that area mean?

: Tender to touch and negative XRay, may suggest a cutaneous or subcutaneous inflammation-  Boil, Pimple or Lipoma -( fatty tissue ). The Dermatologist might help if warm compress massage fails to provide relief.

Area of discomfort?: Is the pain reproducible when you press upon the bony tissue, or is it related to the soft tissue below the xiphoid process? Gastritis can present with pain in the epigastric region below the xiphoid process, as can peptic ulcer disease or pancreatic disease.

Reflux???: Is is acute or chronic? Is it triggered by certain foods too? Try avoiding caffeine and caffeinated drinks, greasy fried foods, oj, acidic foods, spicy foods and nsaids. If you notice improvement in 2 weeks, see a GI doc for further evaluation.

Yes: Pain due to costochondritis can radiate to the typhoid process.
